Tags – another experiment with inspiration from an obvious source. Probably not too interesting in the context of just one person’s work, and only some photos are tagged. But, implement and see what emerges, I guess.
Eliot, I’ve implemented this feature on my site. It’s rather convenient for searching. More interesting is when you combine these tags.
the tags are a natural addition and allow your audience to explore your site organically. I know I’ve spent more time on your site in the last few days than I have in a long while… instead of just getting the RSS update and checking out the new stuff, I’ve been looking around at related images.
Now if you would just put enfamer out there to save the rest of us from Movable Type hell.
Out of curiosity, how did you go about implementing the tags?
They’re implemented in the context of the whole site’s custom CMS: a table of tags, a table of photo-tag correspondences, and some glue code - including a couple join queries that I had to do some actual doc reading to get right. If you’d like to know something more specific, let me know here.
I look forward to seeing what grows. Organic is good.

BTW, I totally second Raul on enfamer.
I think it is pretty interesting in the context of your work, because you have nearly 2000 photos, yet I don’t know how to find “coke girl” quickly (but i did find it in the “portraits” book). Also, I recently had a final exam in a database course, and there were some meta data questions dealing with similar issues.
My list of things to do over the summer includes building a photo log tool for my self. I’m very excited to be finding other people who do this. I’ll have to research this a fair bit more, because there’s a good chance someone has already implemented most of my ideas, and there are probably features that I would want, but haven’t thought of yet.
